CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Lowcountry’s winter storm has arrived, and people all across the area are experiencing snow, freezing rain, and sleet Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. A winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service will remain in effect for Colleton, Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties until Wednesday at noon. Current temperatures are in the mid-20s for local counties. Heavy snow is expected to hit these areas, with accumulations that are predicted to be between three and five inches. Some areas could see up to six inches. Actual snowfall will end Wednesday morning. By midnight, most areas will see one to three inches of snow. Once midnight Thursday rolls around, forecast totals call for two to five inches. Snow will remain on the ground until at least Wednesday morning, Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler said. Moisture from cold rain moving offshore can enhance snowfall totals in the region. The high for Wednesday will be 34 degrees. Some of the snow can melt, but it is expected to refreeze, creating conditions for black ice and frozen roadways. Cold air will continue to impact the area, with a record low predicted for Thursday morning at 18 degrees.
