BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A 32-year-old man who received a third strike with an assault conviction was sentenced in Superior Court Tuesday to a life term in prison.
Erick Arrellano was sentenced to 25 years to life after being found guilty of eight counts -- four felonies and four misdemeanors -- for knocking down and throwing a knife at a man as he attempted to steal a car. The convictions included assault with a deadly weapon.
The incident leading to Arrellano’s arrest occurred July 1 when a man about to drive out of an apartment complex saw him tampering with a neighbor’s vehicle. He confronted Arrellano and they fought; the man ended up on the ground.

He told Arrellano he was done fighting, prosecutors said, but Arrellano kept kicking him — and threw an open pocketknife which missed his face.
Arrellano then tried to steal the man's vehicle. They resumed fighting. A neighbor arrived and helped get the keys away from Arrellano and keep him in the vehicle until deputies arrived.
