Packers power past Panthers for fourth straight victory
Jan 21, 2025
It’s safe to say the Austin girls basketball team is back on track.
After dropping three straight games, including a 63-41 home loss to Northfield on Jan. 11, the Packers have now rattled off four straight wins by at least 14 points each.
The latest of those wins came in Ove Berven Gym Tuesday night as Austin downed Rochester Century (3-15 overall) 72-33.
Austin head coach Eric Zoske said his team learned a lot from its three-game losing streak and that showed on Tuesday as the Packers (13-3 overall) put together an early 15-0 run to go up 31-10 and they never looked back.
“Tonight, I thought our first half was some of the best basketball we’ve played all year,” Zoske said. “We pushed in transition and we slowed down and ran our offense when they got back. We forced 18 turnovers in the first half and I was really proud with how we shared the ball.”
Austin senior Ajiem Agwa poured in 29 points as she connected on three second half three-pointers. She also added six rebounds, three assists and three steals as she was in constant motion to keep the offense humming.
“I think when we get the ball moving, we get really good shots and we make them,” Agwa said. “It’s fun when everyone gets a chance to score.”
Austin senior Marissa Shute finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists as she was unselfish with the ball and relentless with the hustle throughout the night.
“I think we did a good job of making the extra pass tonight,” Shute said. “I think we’ve done a good job growing from our losses. In our last four wins, we’ve grown off of that and we’ve improved what we’re doing.”
Sophomore Addison Walsh finished with eight points and five assists for the Packers and sophomore Quinn Osgood provided eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
