AUSTIN (KXAN) -- On Christmas Eve, Evan Dorshorst got word from his dog sitter that his package - an order of food and medication for his dog - got stolen. "First off, I was sad more than anything," he said. It was worth about $250, and the company sent him a new box free of charge, but Dorshorst's concern quickly pivoted to his neighbors when his sitter told him he wasn't the only one hit. "She showed me a post on Nextdoor, and was like 'hey, you should reach out, I think it's the same person,'" Dorshorst said. Other viewers sent KXAN doorbell camera videos that appear to show the same woman who stole Dorshorst's package. A still from Dorshorst's camera is below. A doorbell camera captures a woman taking a package from a north Austin porch. He said he included his case in a neighbor's police report, and they're still waiting to hear back from the department. "I get it, it's hard to track, it's difficult to get evidence to justify an arrest, it's def an uphill battle," he said. About 500 mail and/or package thefts reported to APD, 311, data shows Austin 311 received a total of 92 package theft reports in November and December. The majority of those came from southeast Austin, according to the data. The Austin Police Department lumps package thefts into mail theft, and says it received 399 reports in November and December. Below is a breakdown of those numbers by police sector, as well as a map detailing where each sector is. APD data shows mail theft by police sector. According to the APD report, 280 thefts happened between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., while the remaining roughly 100 occurred when it's typically dark outside. "What's the solution to this, how do we take care of it?" Dorshorst said. While he doesn't know the answer - he knows where he, at least, is going to start. "When I came down to it, what I landed on was trying to be as good of a neighbor as possible."
