WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- As temperatures remain below freezing, several shelters are open across the DMV to provide relief for those looking to escape the bitter cold. On Tuesday morning, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that a Cold Weather Emergency, initially activated in the District on Sunday, Jan. 19, will remain in place due to the "dangerously low" temperatures. In D.C., during hypothermia season (Nov. 1- April 15), the Homeless Services Hotline is open 24 hours a day to provide additional support and shelter services for residents experiencing homelessness, according to the mayor's office. As a result of the bitter cold, the shelters listed below are open in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Maryland St. Mary's County In St. Mary's County, the following locations will be open to residents who need to take refuge from the cold from Tuesday, Jan. 21 through Thursday, Jan. 23: Charlotte Hall Library- 37600 New Market Road, Charlotte Hall. Open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Loffler Senior Activity Center- 21905 Chancellor’s Run Road, Great Mills. Open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Garvey Senior Activity Center- 23630 Hayden Farm Lane, Leonardtown. Open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Northern Senior Activity Center- 29655 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall. Open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Leonardtown Library- 23600 Hayden Farm Lane, Leonardtown. Howard County firefighters rescue dog from frozen pond Virginia Alexandria Due to the extreme temperatures, the City of Alexandria Winter Shelter, also called Hypothermia Shelter, will be open 24 hours a day until noon on Thursday, Jan. 23. The shelter operates to ensure families and others experiencing homelessness have a warm, clean and safe place to escape the cold. The shelter is located at 2355-A Mill Road and is typically open from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. during the winter weather season, from Nov. 1 through April. 15. This is where the Prince William County Government- A.J. Ferlazzo Building is located. Residents can also visit Manassas Baptist Church and the Bill Mehr Drop-In Center for warmth. However, both shelters operate on a first-come, first-served basis and can only help up to 22 people at a time. Therefore, it is recommended that you call ahead.
