FORECAST: Arctic blast keeps conditions frigid
Jan 21, 2025
Parts of the DMV saw temperatures fall to zero, even below zero, this morning as this arctic air continues to hang around. It was a little warmer to the east near DC, but sub-zero temperatures were more common to the west. The one saving grace is that high pressure has moved overhead, so it was calm as we experienced these coldest temperatures around sunrise. It doesn't take much to produce biting wind chills in this kind of cold, though, so as we gear up to see 5-10 mph winds later today and tonight, that wind chill will be a problem. Extreme Cold Warnings continue across the mountains, with Cold Weather Advisories across the rest of the area, until Thursday morning.
Temperatures will only top out in the teens and lower 20s this afternoon, with high cloud cover limiting how much sunshine we see. This cloud cover is the cause of a passing disturbance, as well as the winter storm passing south of us. A few spotty snow showers can't be ruled out this evening, and any flakes that fall will stick with how cold it is. This is something to watch for if you'll be commuting near the end of the day. Tonight will be the most frigid of this stretch, with air temperatures down around zero across the entire DMV. The small surge of wind I mentioned before will lead to wind chills a few degrees below zero around DC, with chills getting worse as you head west, hitting -20 to -25 in the mountains.
The bitter cold lingers through the day on Wednesday, with highs struggling to get back to 20 degrees. There will be plenty of sunshine and the return of calm winds with a new high pressure center moving overhead. Lows Wednesday night will hit the single digits and teens once again. A southerly wind will finally change our fortunes on Thursday. For the first time in days, afternoon temperatures will climb back above freezing but only hit the mid-30s. More of the same can be expected on Friday under a partly cloudy sky.
Our warming trend takes a stronger step over the weekend, with sunshine boosting temperatures into the upper 30s on Saturday. The 40s will return by Sunday, finally returning us to our seasonal average for mid to late January. Cloud cover will increase significantly Sunday night into Monday, with the next chance of a storm system coming early next week. There are still plenty of question marks as to whether something will develop, but if it does, we could see isolated rain and snow showers on Monday. A chance of precipitation is in the forecast, but we'll watch to see how things develop in the coming days.
Keep warm and have a great rest of your Tuesday!
