SCOTTSVILLE, N.Y. (WROC-TV) — Congratulations to Katie Prince, our latest Golden Apple Award winner. She is a 4th-grade teacher at TJ Connor Elementary in the Wheatland-Chili School District. "She's really kind, is always there when you need a hug. She's never mad at you. She's just an awesome teacher," says Andrew Harper. He was in her class last year and nominated her for the Golden Apple Award. Principal Daniel Murray says, "She's just very deserving of this award and we are proud of her and happy to have her on staff here." Mrs. Prince has a strong academic focus. But also takes time to teach social skills to her 4th-grade students. It's something that really sets her apart. Murray adds, "she builds a classroom family.  She loves the kids. She tells them that and she gets them to work really hard.  So, I think by creating an environment in the classroom that is safe and conducive to learning, the kids really do learn and her academic results are outstanding too.  So really everything you would want from a teacher." This is Katie Prince's 15th year teaching. It's something she always wanted to do. "I've wanted to be a teacher since I was little.  I just love making an impact and building a relationship with the children," she says. 4th grade is her favorite. "I love the curriculum, I love that the kids are independent but also still need you and want you and are cutesy and we can do fun things," she says. We asked her why she chooses to focus so much on social skills. She said, "it's important to take care of their hearts first.  I always tell the kids I have to love you, keep you safe and then we can learn.  Because if they don't feel loved, don't feel safe, they won't feel comfortable taking risks.   Congratulations, Katie Prince!
