ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Nazareth University is celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with several campus events this week.
"Part of what we're doing, is not only educating campus, but hopefully modeling his dialogue behavior. We do not do a very good job today of speaking to one another, or solving problems together, of using that agency coming from different perspectives, in the most impactful way possible," said Wayne Hilson, vice president of community culture and belonging at Nazareth. "So, part of this is education and part of this is bringing our campus together."
Tuesday Nazareth held a lunch discussion called "Voices of Strength - The Women Beside MLK Jr." The event discussed the impact and influence of women in Martin Luther King Jr.'s life, including his wife, Coretta Scott King, an activist in her own right, his mother, Alberta Williams King, and his sister, Christine King Farris. Hilson called these women underrated "champions" in the Civil Rights Movement.

"Everyone has a role to play," Hilson said. "It's no accident that we're highlighting and educating our campus on the women that worked alongside Dr. King and his male colleagues in the Civil Rights Movement. Individuals who - everyone knows more often than not because they were out in front of the cameras, kind of indicative of the times. There were women intelligent, strategic that provided foundation, that provided opportunities to kind of strategically think about the best way forward as they tried to solve problems and move through some pretty tough times."
Nazareth will also be holding a campus-wide commemoration in honor of MLK this Thursday. It will recognize "The Dream of the Beloved Community" by hearing from students and staff alike. You can keep up with Nazareth events here.
