WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- The Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office is warning about a scam that targets real estate transactions.
DA Marc Bennett says realtors, banks, and title companies need to pay close attention to all electronic transactions. The Consumer Protection Division has just begun an investigation of a six-figure electronic transfer of funds in a property closing that was meant to be sent to a legitimate bank account.

Although the email address associated with the communications between parties appeared to be legitimate, it has a single number/letter different from the intended recipient. It wasn't noticed until after the money had been sent to a different account.
The DA's office says this is not the first time this has happened in Sedgwick County. They urge everyone to take the following actions before transferring money:
Confirm the accuracy of any email address purported to represent an individual or entity who is requesting the electronic transfer of any sum of money.
Take the time to call and confirm the identity and/or contact information as well as the account number and routing information of any banking institution to whom money is being electronically sent.
