Jan 21, 2025
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- The Wichita Symphony Orchestra has turned 80.
On January 21, 1945, the orchestra gave its debut performance. Its first conductor was Orien Emil Dalley.
While that name might not be familiar, Dalley had a long and distinguished career. He taught at the University of Wisconsin, Emporia State University, and the University of Michigan.
He served as the Wichita Symphony Orchestra's first conductor until 1949, when he left to teach at Michigan.

In addition, Dalley assisted Wellington native Dr. Joseph Maddy in forming the National High School Orchestra, which became the National High School Orchestra Camp and is known today as Interlochen Center for the Arts. Dalley was inducted into the Frank A. Beach Hall of Distinction at Emporia State in 1996.
The first performance by the Orchestra also included a performance by Jack Lowe and Arthur Whittemore, a rare piano duo who recorded together for over 40 years.
The symphony performed at the Forum until Century II was completed and opened in 1969.
