CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Arctic air making its way across the country plummeted high temperatures into the teens for many areas in Massachusetts on Tuesday.
It's not just the cold air temperatures we have to contend with. Breezy winds Tuesday night and Wednesday morning could make temperatures feel as low as 17 below zero.
Warming shelters open throughout western Massachusetts for those in need
This extreme cold can increase health impacts, especially for sensitive groups. Amherst public health director Kiko Malin told 22News why it's important seek public warming centers if you have nowhere to go.
"Being exposed to low temperatures is really damaging to your health," explained Malin. "Exposure, hypothermia, I mean it can be fatal, if people get really cold. That's why it's important to advertise that there's a place, a warm place, for people to come to if they are outside without shelter."
Frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less with exposure to frigid temperatures. The National Weather Service issued a cold weather advisory for areas in western Massachusetts.
