AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP)--The Town of Amherst has set up a warming center as frigid temperatures are expected this week.
The Bangs Community Center opened a warming center Tuesday morning for people who needed to escape the cold. The center will also stay open between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
Temps expected to reach near or below zero Tuesday night
Kiko Malin, the public health director for Amherst, told 22News why they decided to dedicate a space to keep people warm.
"When we saw that the temperatures were going to be in the single digits this week, we decided that we should open a warming center here at the Bangs community center just to offer a place for people who don't have somewhere else to go to come, be warm be with others, get a hot beverage," said Malin.
The likelihood for frostbite and hypothermia are increased over the next few days. Under Massachusetts state law, landlords provide heat to tenants between September 15th and June 15th.
