Pittsfield Fire Department Deputy Chief Daniel Garner said that at approximately 7:45 a.m., the station received a report about an ice fisherman falling through the ice of Onota Lake. While on their way to the lake, an initial report stated that the fisherman had gotten out of the water, but an additional update said that he had fallen through the ice again and was in distress.
Pittsfield Fire said that when they arrived at the lake, crews spotted two fishermen over 100 yards off the boat launch at Burbank Park, with one of the men in the water. Firefighters wore cold-water rescue suits, and as they approached the fisherman to prepare for rescue a section of ice shelf broke off.
The firefighters entered the water and secured the fisherman to an ice sled brought by the Pittsfield Fire Department, and successfully removed him from the water. Pittsfield Fire was assisted by the Pittsfield Police Department, with the Berkshire County Dive Team on standby.
The fisherman suffered from hypothermia as a result of the incident and was brought to Berkshire Medical Center. He is expected to make a full recovery. One Pittsfield firefighter also got hypothermia due to the failure of his cold-water rescue suit and was also brought to the hospital. He is also expected to recover.
