Jan 21, 2025
A demonstration is planned during the opening weekend of the Sundance Film Festival designed to press Palestinian-related issues as well as media coverage of genocide. The lead organizer is Health Care Workers for Palestine, and three other groups are involved. The event is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Organizers said the demonstration is slated to occur somewhere along Main Street. A precise location was not known by midday Tuesday. The organizers said they expected attendance of between 50 and 100 people. They want to gather on the sidewalk and will bring a red carpet they plan to unroll as part of the demonstration. The organizers were not sure whether they will attempt to march. They said it is possible some of the demonstrators will bring signs calling for the liberation of Palestine and the creation of a Palestinian state.“The protest does not take issue with the Sundance Film Festival as a festival per se. Rather, the protest seeks to educate and motivate the film industry to do a better job of exploring the full humanity of Palestinian life rather than relying on cartoony characters and cliche plot lines,” a release announcing the event says.Information about the demonstration from City Hall was not immediately available and it was not known whether the organizers are seeking permitting for the event. There have long been demonstrations involving a variety of causes, particularly those of the political left, during Sundance as organizers seek the spotlight on Park City during the festival.A pro-Palestinian demonstration was held on Main Street in 2024 during Sundance. The event drew an estimated 200 demonstrators calling for a ceasefire in the war in Gaza, challenging the Biden administration’s response to the conflict and criticizing Zionism. The post Park City demonstration planned during Sundance in support of Palestinians appeared first on Park Record.
