Parkites Lindsey Vonn and Lauren Macuga were back in action over the weekend at the Cortina d’Ampezzo World Cup for downhill and super-G races. Saturday, each posted top-20 results in Cortina’s downhill. Sunday, Vonn crashed out of the super-G race after her skis caught on themselves. Macuga finished 16th in Sunday’s super-G race. Italians won both races, with Sophia Goggia winning Saturday’s downhill and Federica Brignone winning Sunday’s super-G. “I got a little bit behind the course and tried to pull it off,” Vonn said to the Associated Press. “My skis clicked together, and I lost my balance.”Vonn is taking a positive spin on the crash, believing it will help reset expectations. She had the best results of her comeback the week before at the St. Anton World Cup. Vonn was on pace for a top-five finish Sunday before the crash. She posted the fourth-fastest second sector time. The 40-year-old legend said she plans to ski through the 2026 Olympics next February in Cortina before retiring again. She’s rapidly approaching the record for most cups ever skied — she’s at 401, with the record being 409.“It’s just going to take a little bit more time,” Vonn said on her return to form. “I need to be patient myself, and I hope that everyone can be patient with me so that I can just keep my expectations in check and just keep trying to get better every weekend.”Lauren Macuga celebrates her first World Cup win earlier this month in St. Anton, Austria. I need more time, and I think it’s actually a good thing that I didn’t do well this weekend because it leaves me really hungry for more and also hopefully for next year.”The next tour stop for Vonn, Macuga and the rest of the field will be the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Cup this weekend, with another downhill and super-G. After this weekend’s cup, the speed skiers have their World Championships in Saalbach, Austria, from Feb. 4-16.Macuga too took a positive spin on her weekend. Her two results were her first outside an event’s top-10 all season. She was also coming off a fantastic St. Anton Cup, where she won her first cup race. “Was excited to get another chance on the course before the Olympics next year,” said Macuga. “It is a challenging course but also a very fun one. I competed with a viral infection and hadn’t been able to sleep for the past week, so (I) was excited to get these results.”Macuga is feeling more confident than ever after St. Anton. She believes if she could get a cup win, she can get a second — she just can’t make any mistakes. Macuga would like to grab a few podium-finishes at the upcoming Championships. Macuga shared that this week’s cup just passed snow control and will be a warm one. She feels it’s important to ski her best at every cup to gain experience moving forward in her career. “It will be important to get race ready,” said Macuga on this weekend. “Leave everything on the hill, no regrets. … I am excited to have the opportunity to keep seeing these new tracks and put forth some solid skiing.”Macuga said she’s still enjoying her time on the road, although she’s missing her cat. She got to spend time with her family over Christmas, which has two other sisters skiing on their cup tours. Macuga is excited for the second half of the season with her team. Macuga added that it’s been phenomenal to ski alongside Vonn, her idol. She said that the entire team knew she still had it after immediately seeing her in training in November. Vonn is now in a position to give advice and support her younger teammates like Macuga. This week’s cup begins with downhill training Thursday and Friday. The competition will begin with Saturday’s downhill, continuing with Sunday’s super-G. Results can be tracked on the Cup’s FIS page, and the races can be streamed on Ski and Snowboard Live. The post Vonn crashes out of Cortina super-G race appeared first on Park Record.
