Vikings agree to multiyear contract extension with Kevin O’Connell

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Vikings announced they have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension with O’Connell. The exact length of the contract extension and the average annual value were not made public.
“It is an absolute honor to continue leading the Minnesota Vikings,” O’Connell said in a statement. “Holding this prestigious position is something I never take for granted, and I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Wilf family for their unwavering belief in what we are building together.”
In the release, O’Connell continued by thanking his wife Leah and their children, his coaching staff, his support staff, and, of course, his players, before adding, ” I can’t wait to get back to work with all of them as we continue to build upon the high standard we’ve set and the positive environment we’ve created.”
This was always the expected outcome, despite rumors that started to swirl over the past month.
Though a reported suggested that multiple teams might be interested in trading for O’Connell, there was no chance the Vikings were ever going to let him get away, especially with the resume he has put together.
In the release, Vikings co-owner Mark Wilf credited O’Connell with being an an innovative play caller, an excellent communicator, and a strong leader who motivates and connects with his players.
“He has helped establish a culture that positions us for sustained success,” Wilf said in a statement. “He will continue to set the standard we need as we pursue a championship for Vikings fans.”
Since taking the reins in 2022, O’Connell has amassed a 34-17 regular season record. And while he currently has an 0-2 record in the playoffs, the Vikings seem to have a very bright future with him at the helm.
“There is no question this team is on the right trajectory under Kevin’s continued leadership,” Vikings co-owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement. “His authenticity, passion and positive energy, along with his impressive understanding of the game, has helped lead to the success we’ve experienced over the past three years and will be foundational blocks on which to build moving forward.”
Notably, in 2024, O’Connell became the fastest head coach in franchise history to win 30 games, reaching the mark in 46 games. That bested legendary head coach Dennis Green, who posted 30 wins in 48 games, as well as Hall of Famer head coach Bud Grant, who posted 30 wins in 50 games.
In the release, O’Connell closed by shouting out Vikings fans, emphasizing how they are the best in the NFL.
“There is no greater joy than leading our team in front of you each Sunday and experiencing the home field advantage you create,” O’Connell said in a statement. “I’m thrilled for the years ahead and will continue to give you everything I have as we pursue a Super Bowl for the state of Minnesota.”
