CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Georgia man was arrested after a Caroline County woman was attacked at a hotel on Saturday, with the victim saying she feigned death to try and avoid further harm.
At about 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, an unidentified 48-year-old woman came to the Caroline County Fire Station 10 in the Carmel Church area for help after a "brutal assault" at the nearby Super 8 Hotel, according to the Caroline County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies who spoke to her said the victim had significant injuries to her face, with both of her eyes almost swollen shut. She also had bruising on her neck.
"The victim recounted a harrowing ordeal where she became unconscious during the attack and tried to remain so, believing the assailant thought he had killed her," the sheriff's office said.
The woman was given medical attention and, receiving that treatment, she was able to describe her attacker in detail, which authorities said was "crucial in the subsequent manhunt." Said attacker was reportedly an acquaintance of hers.

Holmes was charged with felony strangulation and felony aggravated malicious wounding. According to authorities, he is being held in North Carolina with no bond.
"We are relieved to have brought swift justice in this case and continue to provide the necessary resources to aid the victim's long recovery," the sheriff's office said.
The Caroline County Sheriff's Office thanked the North Carolina authorities that aided in this investigation -- including the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina Highway Patrol -- for their assistance.
