RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A powerful winter storm is hitting the Gulf Coast states today and it is bringing unprecedented snow to many areas right along the extreme southern coast of the United States. Some places are receiving snow that haven't seen it in nearly half a century. This system will be heading our way later this evening and tonight and could bring snow to some places in Central Virginia. The best chance of seeing any measurable snow will be for areas south of Petersburg into North Carolina. It looks like areas along the Virginia-North Carolina line, including Greensville County, Southampton County and the Tidewater could pick up a dusting to 2 inches of snow from 7 p.m. this evening until 2 a.m. tomorrow morning. Areas north of Petersburg into Metro Richmond might see some flurries or a couple of quick snow showers as this system is passing through North Carolina. Most of Central Virginia will see cloudy to mostly cloudy skies through midnight. As that system departs early Wednesday morning it will take the snow and clouds out of our area and that will allow our temperatures to drop quickly to near 10 degrees by early Wednesday morning. Our winds will kick up out of the north and we will have some extremely cold wind chills as we get ready for work or school Wednesday morning. It is likely wind chill values will be near zero across Metro Richmond with areas north of Ashland having Sub-Zero windchill values and possibly as cold as minus 10 in Northern Virginia. Wind chill values from Petersburg and points south will remain in the single digits. We will see sunny skies for Wednesday and the coldest part of this Arctic blast will be over us as our high temperatures only climb into the middle 20s. After that, we will see a slow moderation in our temperatures so that we will climb into the middle 30s on Thursday, around 40 by Friday, and into the middle 40s on Saturday with sunny skies. We could climb to near 50 by Sunday but we will have more clouds and a chance for a few spotty showers as a weak weather system approaches Central Virginia.
