PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The man accused of stabbing his housemate to death in Providence faced a judge Tuesday afternoon.
Officers were called to a Bailey Court apartment building Monday evening to investigate reports of a stabbing.
Prosecutors said the officers opened the front door and found 30-year-old Junior Medina Agosto standing at the top of the stairs with his hands up. He was taken into custody after being searched for weapons.
The officers also found the victim, identified as a 36-year-old man, lying on the kitchen floor suffering from a stab wound to the torso. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Agosto and the victim lived in the same apartment, but each had separate bedrooms that shared a kitchen, according to prosecutors.
Two unidentified witnesses told investigators that the men appeared to be arguing over food prior to the stabbing.
Agosto claimed the victim attacked him and tried to strangle him, which is why he reached over the counter, grabbed a knife and stabbed him once.
But prosecutors stated an autopsy revealed the victim was actually stabbed twice.
Agosto was charged with murder and possession of a knife as a result. He was ordered held without bail pending his next court hearing, which is slated for Jan. 28.
This was the capital city's first homicide of the year.
