PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — If you're heading to a Brown University Health facility anytime soon, you're going to have to mask up. Brown University Health, formerly Lifespan, announced Tuesday that it will be reinstating masking requirements for patients, staff and visitors due to "high community transmission rates of respiratory viruses." The masking requirements officially take effect Wednesday. Brown University Health said patients or visitors who do not have a face mask will be provided one and must wear it over their nose and mouth. Staff will only be required to wear face masks while directly caring for patients. Brown University Health said there's been an uptick in hospital admissions for respiratory viral infections, as well as illnesses among staff. Since the vast majority of emergency departments statewide are overcrowded, the Rhode Island Department of Health advises those with less serious health issues to visit an urgent care center or consult their primary care physician before heading to the hospital.
