Deputy fires shots, killing one on Shelby Oaks Drive, TBI says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person is dead Tuesday after a Shelby County deputy fired shots at a subject in a stolen car in northeast Memphis, authorities said.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate.
A TBI spokesperson said the shooting happened at 10:40 Tuesday morning in the 1600 block of Shelby Oaks Drive, when deputies spotted a subject in a stolen silver sedan.
Deputies tried to take the person into custody. The situation escalated, and at least one deputy fired shots, killing the subject, TBI said.
They were pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured.
TBI is investigating why the deputy fired shots.
All drivers are asked to avoid the area for a few hours during the investigation.
