MLGW asks customers to voluntarily conserve electricity ahead of peak
Jan 21, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- MLGW said on Tuesday morning that customers should consider voluntarily conserving power due to the high energy demand as a result of the cold temperatures.
The frigid temperatures impacting the Mid-South have not caused issues for Memphis Light, Gas, and Water and Tennessee Valley Authority customers so far, according to the utility companies.
But the demand for energy is expected to peak on Wednesday morning and will exceed TVA's all-time peak energy demand of more than 34,000 megawatts in January of last year, said MLGW.
"We expect the all time peak will happen early morning, very early as everyone is getting up and getting ready and that's across the entire Tennessee Valley, not just here in Memphis," said Doug McGowen, president and CEO of MLGW. "If everybody does a little bit that all adds up and helps everybody meet the overall demand and ensures that everybody has power."
MLGW says some ways of cutting back include turning down your home's thermostat to 68 degrees or less, unplugging electric vehicles, unplugging space heaters and postponing the use of large appliances like dryers, dishwashers and electric ovens.
The low temperature on Tuesday morning was around 13 degrees. As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, MLGW's outage map showed 146 customers without power, well below the number in some previous cold weather events.
Commercial and industrial customers who participate in the TVA and MLGW Demand Response programs will be called upon to help reduce overall demand. They are being asked to make voluntary conservation efforts during peak times between 5 and 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
