MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Memphis Area Transit Authority recently replaced its interim CEO with Transpro CEO John Lewis. Transpro issued a harsh report on MATA last year, finding a "frivolous use of taxpayer dollars." Drivers expressed their disappointment with this decision in last week's meeting. MATA OKs contract with Transpro, gets new interim CEO The Amalgamated Transit Union Local is an organization that speaks for MATA workers. Early Tuesday morning, the organization met with Memphis Mayor Paul Young for almost two hours to demand a seat on the bus. “We did some research and we weren’t actually pleased with some of the things we have seen,” said ATU Local President Harrison Currie. “We work directly within this job, we do the job and we haven't had a word – a say on it. They haven't come to us, the body, union, the people that actually work at MATA, and asked them anything and we feel left out.” According to an email that was sent to our newsroom, they are asking to rescind the recent votes allowing Transpro to manage MATA, allow the current administration to stay in position as is, and bring the trolley back.  “One of the main things is we want some transparency, especially with how things are going to go with the Transpro contract. But after two hours of discussion, the group tells us the conversation will have to continue at another time. “We are asking for several things and we haven't gotten to quite that point yet but we are going to ask them about it this evening," said Currie. Evelyn Williams, the Financial and Recording Secretary for ATU said they were invited to be there all day until a solution is reached. We will continue to follow this story.
