Frigid temperatures stick around into the midweek
Jan 21, 2025
The Arctic air mass that has seemingly plagued Central and Eastern Kentucky for the last several weeks stayed put on Tuesday, even with a weak boundary providing some clouds and a few flakes. Temperatures actually rose toward daybreak but it was still a frigid start with readings in the upper single digits and low teens. Unfortunately we didn’t see much of a “warm-up” with afternoon highs struggling to reach the upper teens although parts of Southern Kentucky managed to sneak into the low 20s. We’ve got one more day of dealing with the Arctic air before temperatures start to recover.
As skies clear and winds lighten up into early Wednesday, the combination of the frigid air and the light snowpack on the ground will help temperatures to drop below zero in many locations to begin the day. This will be the coldest morning we’ve seen in roughly 1 year so be prepared for a bitterly cold start. A Cold Weather Advisory is out for the entire area through 10am Wednesday morning so bundle up and dress in layers if you are heading out. Fortunately with sunshine and a south wind in place, temperatures should recover nicely with afternoon highs working back into the low to mid-20s.
Our warming trend should continue into the late week as another weak system makes a run for the Ohio Valley late Thursday and into Friday. Temperatures should climb back toward the freezing mark for afternoon highs on Thursday along with some sunshine before the clouds increase late in the day. A few snow showers look possible heading into Friday as that system works through and temperatures will be held back a bit due to the cloud cover around so most spots will reach the upper 20s by the end of the week.
The weekend looks great to start with more quiet weather as sunshine should help temperatures surge back into the low 40s by Saturday afternoon so it will feel pretty mild considering the deep freeze we have been in. Another storm system looks to develop to our southwest and ride up into the Ohio Valley so precipitation chances should ramp up a bit on Sunday. The models aren’t synced up with the strength/timing/placement of it all so both rain and snow are on the table for Sunday but overall confidence isn’t overly high right now so we’ll have to keep on things in the coming days.
