INDIANAPOLIS -- For 20 years, the mascot for the Red Cross, Buddy the Blood Drop has encouraged individuals throughout the country to be blood donors.
On Tuesday, the Indiana region of the Red Cross hosted a mascot-filled birthday party to celebrate Buddy's impact on the region. Some of the mascots that joined the festivities for cake and games included:
Purdue Pete
Indy Fuel Nitro
Indianapolis Indians Rowdie
Sage the Night Owl from Western Governors University
According to a news release from the Red Cross, January serves as National Blood Donors Month, a time to celebrate those who donate blood and encourage others to donate.
"Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood," the release said. "Through a national inventory, the Red Cross is able to move blood wherever and whenever it is needed most."
Officials said that during the winter months, illness and weather can lead to lower appointment numbers and decreased donors.
