VOLCANO (KHON2) -- The fourth phase of the current eruption at Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island has been paused since Saturday. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You Still, experts at Hawaiian Volcano Observatory believe Madam Pele isn't finished yet. "What we're seeing is each fountaining episode starts with a steep deflation of the summit because we're extracting lava out of the summit and as it goes on when it finally shuts off it immediately starts to inflate again so it repressurizes again telling us there's still material coming in," HVO Scientist-in-Charge Ken Hon said. "As long as we see that bounce back that straight change from inflation to deflation I'm pretty sure we're going to see another episode." Hon notes that this eruption is unusual, but not unprecedented in Kilauea's recent history. Kilauea Volcano activity increases, no eruption "This eruption is an unusual type of eruption that we call episodic eruptions. It's had four episodes now and it looks like it's headed for its fifth. The last time there was one of these in the summit was the 1959 Kilauea Iki eruptions where you had 17 different fountains, and the prelude to Puu Oo the early Puu Oo eruptions where we had all of the high fountains in there were 44 high fountains." The fountaining has gotten as high as 300 feet in the air during this eruption. Early Tuesday morning lava glow could still be seen from the USGS's live camera looking at Halemaumau.
