GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- As soon as the sun set on Tuesday, the plans were in motion for the winter weather response. In Greensboro, they started 24-hour operations, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation staged their crews. The NCDOT spent most of the day Tuesday putting down, brine but now all they can do is wait to see what happens. “All our preparedness efforts ... translate from season to season, storm to storm and event to event,” Guilford County Emergency Management Director Steven Grose said. During any type of weather event, the team serves as the main hub. “Taking that information and making sure it is in the hands of the folks that might need it the most or might be the most vulnerable,” Grose said. First responders, road crews, schools and more than 100 agencies and organizations all get the same information. “We are prepared, and our partners are prepared to alter plans as needed and coordinate amongst one another if we do have some hazardous travel ... to come out of this system,” Grose said. High Point has six people on call overnight and two trucks loaded with salt. After the last storm, they did update some of their routes to include additional streets. In Greensboro, they started 24-hour operations overnight to keep an eye on road conditions. They did pretreat all elevated structures. With these frigid temperatures, salt is only effective when it's above 15 degrees. Across the Triad, the NCDOT has all of its equipment and staff in place. They just ask that drivers slow down and increase their following distance in case of any snow or ice. “We just want to remind drivers when you see our crews out doing work with their trucks, just give us a little room to complete that work,” said Kelse Edwards from the NCDOT. No matter what happens with the roads, it is still dangerously cold. “If you are planning on doing something outside this evening maybe ... wait a few weeks,” Grose said. It’s important to keep up to date. One way to do that is to sign up for GEANI alerts which are county-wide in Guilford County.
