FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- With any Indiana winter, frigid temperatures cover most bodies of water with layer of ice people use to skate, fish or play hockey.
While the ice may seem safe at a glance, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) warned Hoosiers to be mindful when venturing onto frozen lakes and ponds.
"If you've got 3-4 inches of ice, that's pretty safe," said Gannery Htoo, a conservation officer with the DNR.
Bodies of water with flowing water, such as rivers or streams, should be avoided, according to the DNR.
Those venturing onto ice can use an auger to test its thickness; however, anyone who is unsure or unable to determine the ice's thickness should keep off the ice, according to the DNR.
The DNR also recommends wearing a life jacket and letting a friend or family member know your location before going out.
