CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – With a winter storm warning in effect for Lowcountry counties, forecasters are calling for increased snow totals to fall across the area mixed with ice and sleet. Storm Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler said Lowcountry counties can expect to see between 3 to 5 inches of snow, with some areas seeing up to 6 inches and snowfall ending early Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service winter storm warning is in effect for Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, and Colleton counties until noon Wednesday. Once we hit 7 p.m., Fowler said snow and ice will mix and overnight is when most snow amounts will fall. The high for Wednesday is 34 degrees; however, the possibility of sunshine can melt some of the snow on the ground. Sleet and ice are expected more along the coast, Fowler explained. Refreezing is possible with a low of 18 degrees on Wednesday, which would be a record low, and black ice can happen on roads until Thursday. If you must drive when ice is on the streets, reduce your speed, try to avoid changing lanes, stay alert on bridges, and avoid driving at night if possible. Be sure to keep plenty of space between you and the next car. If you start to skid, steer into the skid rather than against it.
