COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – State police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Colleton County that stemmed from a domestic violence call.
Deputies with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office were called to help a citizen with a domestic-related incident on January 11.
The sheriff’s office said that while one deputy spoke with the caller, a second attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect as he pulled into the driveway of a Jennings Court home.
“The suspect exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at the deputy. In response, the deputy fired his weapon at the suspect through his windshield,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The suspect, Harley Alan Prater, 30, surrendered and was taken into custody. No one was injured.
Officials say Prater is charged with domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, and pointing and presenting a firearm.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was asked to investigate the shooting, which is standard protocol.
