Safety tips for traveling on icy and slick roads

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - It’s not something we see often here in the Lowcountry — ice on the roadways. It can be extremely dangerous, especially for those who have never driven on it before.
With ice, snow, and sleet on the way, officials are asking people to stay home if you can. But if you must go out, keep these tips in mind:
Reduce your speed, try to avoid changing lanes, stay alert on bridges, avoid driving at night if possible, and keep plenty of space between yourself and the car in front of you.
If you start to feel yourself skidding, steer into the skid rather than steering against it.
If you find yourself in an emergency like getting stuck on the road, stay calm, call 911 to report your location, and make your car visible to other drivers by turning your dome light on. Turn your car on and off for short periods of time.
The National Weather Service in Charleston said roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous as frozen precipitation impact the area Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
Before heading out, be sure you have an emergency kit with warm clothes, a blanket, a flashlight and batteries, a shovel, and jumper cables in your car. Really, anything that would help if you become stranded.
