BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - A proposal to bring back the so-called Sunday blue laws in North Dakota was voted down in a recent vote. The latest version of the bill was seeking to require some retail businesses to close from midnight to noon, on Sundays.North Dakota previously had a similar law in place before it was repealed in 2019.The idea was to allow for men and women to have a day off to observe the Sabbath. But this time around, several business owners and legislators opposed House Bill 1150. "We had an exceptional law. Not in a good way. But an exception for this and an exception for that," Rep. Dan Ruby said. "Mr. speaker, the business community didn't ask for this. The general public didn't ask for this. So, I hope we can defeat this bill and keep consistency and fairness for all businesses and citizens." House lawmakers also recently rejected a bill that would've changed the classification of mitragynine also known as 'Kratom' into a schedule one drug.Right now, Kratom is considered a nutritional supplement and is sold in some smoke shops.
