The Navy says it will name a landing ship after the late Maj. Megan McClung, the first woman U.S. Marine to be killed during the Iraq War in 2006. McClung, who trained at Camp Pendleton, was a public affairs officer who died when a mine exploded, destroying the vehicle she was riding in. At the time, she was guiding journalists from Newsweek magazine into Ramadi. McClung’s name will appear on the first of a new class of landing ships that will be used to transport Marines globally. She knew that world well, having been a member of the Pendleton-based 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, a rapid air-and-ground attack group. 1st MEF has played a central role in many conflicts, including Desert Storm and the Iraq War.
