ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Going to the Super Bowl is a dream for many but for Sport Management Club members at St. John Fisher University, that dream is about to become a reality. "Something as big as the Super Bowl is obviously once in a lifetime. So, to be able to do it at such a young age and so early in our professional careers, is just such a blessing," said Tia Buttino, the president of the club. Over the past year, club members were able to raise $8,000 for a trip to volunteer on the big day. According to Meredith Hart, treasurer of the club, there was never a doubt they could do it. "We're very dedicated to getting to the Super Bowl. So, I knew we would do everything we could to get that money," said Hart. The students got some money from the university, but the bulk they raised themselves by raffling off prizes donated by alumni and local community partners. The cash is for flights, hotel stays, car rentals, gas, and food. Paul Hemingway, their advisor, worked for the Buffalo Bills for years, so he gladly leveraged his connections for the students he believes in. "I was very confident in this group," said Hemingway. "We've got a lot of great, strong leaders, very driven, and I knew that if I just opened the door a little bit, they would be able to just crash through the door and make it happen." Of course, for sports management students, aside from volunteering — the name of the game is networking. "I hope to do event management," said Hart, "and I think we'll be able to see a lot of what goes into that. Especially because the Super Bowl is such a mega event." And, it's actually what Buttino is most looking forward to. "In sport, they always say, 'It's who you know not what you know.' So, I think a lot of us are just super excited to be able to interact with people that have been successful in this career, and just learn from them, and watch them." On game day, these students are going to be helping fans through their Super Bowl experience by providing information about the stadium, and so much more.
