US Figure Skating Championships could bring Wichita $8 million
Jan 20, 2025
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The U.S. Figure Skating Championships begins Tuesday in Wichita. It's the first time for the city, and it's expected to bring in a seven-figure profit for the city. Those lacing their skates up say bringing their sport to Kansas is a privilege.
"It's an honor," said U.S. Junior Champion Luke Wang.
Defending their junior pair title, Luke Wang and Olivia Flores take the ice, hopefully, to share the passion they have for figure skating on the biggest stage Wichita has seen.
Wang said it's a thrill.
"Being able to perform in front of other people, I think that is truly the most special thing. That's what I love most about it," said Wang.
It's a thought shared between the pair.

"Being able to do something that we love so much and travel to such cool places is very surreal," said Flores.
Wichita is expected to make roughly $8 million off hosting the championship, according to Josh Howell, VP of Sports Development for Visit Wichita.
"It's huge for the City of Wichita, a significant economic impact, and just a great event for Wichita," said Howell.
He said the impact was felt beyond the ice.
"All the figure skating fans, from all across the country, that'll be here two, three, four, sometimes five days, staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, visiting our attractions," said Howell.
For Wang and Flores, it's the nerves of entertaining an expected sold-out crowd that keeps them hooked on the sport.
"It's always that same adrenaline rush, that wanting to throw up, it's a lot of fun, each time you just love it so much, and that adrenaline rush is why we love this sport," said the pair.
Visit Wichita's representative said this event will snowball into the hosting of the March Madness first round, another win for Wichita.
