[1] Coldest in years for some before slow warm-up – With very clear skies and dry air on the backside of the winter storm impacting the Gulf Coast, extremely cold air has moved into the Land of Enchantment. Wind-chill values of below zero degrees have or are still occurring for most, with it feeling as low as around negative 40 degrees in the far-northern mountains. But, with the drier air mass ahead, temperatures will slowly rebound with mostly light winds.
[2] New Mexico lawmakers pushing education and housing bills this legislative session – The 60-day legislative session is set to kick off at noon on Tuesday. Many lawmakers are hoping to pass bills focused on improving education and solving the housing crisis. Both Democrats and Republicans have expressed their goals for the upcoming session. Despite an underwhelming special session last summer in which they failed to pass public safety laws, the two parties have said they’re optimistic to come together on those issues.
[3] New Mexico CYFD settles lawsuit over failure to protect abused children – Two kids who were abused by their parents repeatedly between 2015 and 2018 will receive a huge payout from the state. Their guardian filed a lawsuit accusing the New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department of not doing its job and putting the kids in danger. 47 reports of abuse and neglect were sent to CYFD by citizens concerned about the welfare of a seven and eight-year-old. The lawsuit was settled for $4 million.
[4] Nob Hill restaurant reopens after holiday weekend break-in – A Nob Hill restaurant was forced to close for part of the busy holiday weekend after getting burglarized. The owner of the Farmacy restaurant said the break-in happened early Sunday morning. He said the thief took everything from iPads and liquor to towels and merchandise. The Albuquerque Police Department arrested Jason Rojas after getting a call for a suspicious person in that area. He is facing a number of charges, including criminal trespassing.
[5] Sandia National Laboratory to conduct controlled fire experiment on Tuesday – Sandia National Laboratories will be conducting a controlled fire experiment Tuesday morning. The labs said a plume of black smoke may be visible from their Lurance Canyon burn site on Kirtland Air Force Base.
