According to Capt. Josh Phillips, authorities found the body of Cassandra Shields laying in the middle of the road on Madison Street in between Ellis Road and La Mesa Drive at 9:43 p.m. Sunday. The location is in Minnehaha County, north of Family Park in Sioux Falls and it's a low maintenance road.
Phillips said the cause of death was exposure to the cold temperatures. Sioux Falls had temperatures below 0 degrees and a high temperature in the single digits Sunday.
Phillips said Shields was not homeless and was wearing winter clothing, but it wasn't enough to be outside for that long. Authorities believe Shields had been in the road only since sometime Sunday, Phillips said as of Tuesday.
Officials are asking for help about where she was Friday until Sunday.
“To help us fill in that void,” Phillips said. “It was very cold.”
Phillips said people should contact authorities or crimestoppers with any information.
