OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma non-profit, who helps young families and children in crisis, faces a bit of a crisis themselves. They say a recent surge in births and a cut in funding has left them short on care seats for newborns. Now, they are turning to the community for help. "If they need a car seat and we have it, we give it to them, we don't care what their situation is, that baby's going to get home safely," Jennifer Roberts, Executive Director for OKCity Crisis Nursery said. OKC approves MAPS 4 Neighborhood and Community parks masterplan Most people would describe it as the best day of their life, the birth of a child. However, sometimes you need outside help with the new child or maybe some of their siblings. That is where OKCity Crisis Nursery comes in. "We have anything from like domestic violence situations or like a mom going into a hospital, having a baby, and we watch her other kids and siblings of that new baby," Roberts said. "We're not a daycare, we're just a really fun place for them to just be a kid. So, we are like the fun aunt or the grandma." When they get a call from DHS saying a family is in need, they provide. However, they are struggling to keep up with the demand for newborn care seats right now. "It's usually between 20 to 25 car seats a month," Roberts said. This month has surprised them for two reasons though. One is funding being cut from different programs. The other is the increase in need for car seats. "With just the hospitals alone, we're over 50 this month, right now, it's increasing," Roberts said. "January is usually a slow month, so I'm not sure like why it's more, maybe just more babies being born. I don't know." Fire officials urge residents to plan ahead in case of emergency during cold weather While they are trying to keep up with demand, they hope the community will lend a hand, just as they do for those in need. "I have a feeling it's going to be like this all year, so we're just going to have to step up and do more," Roberts said. There are several ways you can help!
