VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- With cold blasting through the region, and a surplus of call-outs, around 100 school buses in Virginia Beach were delayed on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools said that the issue spanned across all grade levels as the schools operate on a 4-tiered school schedule. Seventy-one buses experienced mechanical issues including not starting, frozen doors, air leaks, etc. These problems expanded across the city, and four service trucks responded as quickly as they could.
In addition to the bus issues, 35 drivers called out sick at 5 a.m., a number that's around double was it usually is, the spokesperson said. The total number of drivers out was 75.
