PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -Donald Trump was sworn in as America's 47th president Monday afternoon. Leaders from across the aisle in Virginia and North Carolina responded after Trump's inauguration speech, which covered topics ranging from immigration to the two assassination attempts on his life. Inauguration Day Latest: Trump becomes the 47th president of the United States Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin posted to Facebook after attending the inauguration, calling the moment an honor. U.S. Representative Rob Wittman, who serves in Virginia's 1st congressional district, released a statement following the inauguration, criticizing the leadership from the past four years while looking forward in a "new direction." Today marks a new day in America. After four years of a dwindling economy with sky-high gas and grocery prices, a porous southern border allowing deadly fentanyl to flow into our communities, and global unrest jeopardizing America's standing on the world stage, the American people spoke and delivered a mandate for change. With Republican majorities in the House, Senate, and White House, we have a great opportunity to create lasting, positive change. As we move forward in a new direction, I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do what the people elected us to do: get the work of the nation done. I wish President Trump and Vice President Vance the blessings of good health and sound judgement as they lead our nation and work to strengthen our economy, secure our border, and once again project American strength across the globe. I remain focused on working with their administration to improve the lives of Virginia's First District residents and all Americans. May God bless America. Rob Wittman (VA-01) Congressman Bobby Scott, who represents Virginia's 3rd congressional district, was more critical of Trump's inauguration speech, claiming the newly sworn-in president focused on culture wars instead of the issues American families are facing. The American people have made it clear they want Washington to focus on lowering costs and investing in the economy. I am committed to working across the aisle to create jobs and lower grocery, housing, health care, energy and other costs for hardworking American families. Instead of addressing the cost of living, President Trump spent his first day in office issuing executive orders focusing on culture wars, ending efforts to promote diversity, halting our progress combatting the climate crisis and sabotaging the federal workforce. He issued shameful pardons and commutations for those who committed acts of violence against law enforcement in their failed insurrection at the U.S. Capital on January 6, 2021. He even issued an executive order to end birthright citizenship in violation of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. None of these actions will invest in our economy or lower costs for taxpayers. I stand ready, willing and able to work with President Trump and Congressional Republicans to take real actions to make life better for America's working families. Bobby Scott (VA-03) North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis also released a statement after Monday's inauguration, showing his excitement for what he believes the next four years will bring to the Tar Heel State. As we begin this new chapter, there is much to be excited about for America’s future. President Donald J. Trump has laid out an ambitious agenda to restore prosperity, security, and opportunity for every American. I’m eager to work alongside him to advance his agenda, including securing our borders, revitalizing our economy, and supporting North Carolina’s recovery. President Trump’s commitment to confirming constitutionalist judges, rebuilding our military to confront global threats, and creating jobs through tax cuts and deregulation will have a lasting positive impact on our state and country. I’m proud to support President Trump’s vision for a safer, more prosperous America and look forward to helping make it a reality Thom Tillis (R-NC) 10 On Your Side has reached out to other leaders throughout Virginia and North Carolina for responses.
