TikTok goes dark for 14 hours, students react to the potential ban

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Americans spent less than 24 hours without TikTok when it went dark Saturday night after a federal ban took effect.
“When it was banned for a while, I did start to think maybe this was a good thing because I know I’m not the only one that’s addicted,” University of Kentucky student Gracie Allen said.
Addictive was a consistent word in conversations about TikTok with these students. They say the app lures them in with videos curated to their interests, and they end up scrolling on the app for hours at a time.
When the app stopped working, users resulted to other forms of entertainment.
“I actually used Instagram reels for a little bit instead of TikTok,” UK student Diego Miranda said.
After the federal ban took effect, President Donald Trump issued an executive order allowing the app to function in the United States, but it’s currently not available in the app store.
“I actually deleted it because I didn’t think it was coming back,” UK student Nick Stoffel said.
The bipartisan law that originally shut the app down still stands, meaning app stores can’t legally carry TikTok and users in the U.S. can’t update the app if they already have it.
President Trump’s new executive order now gives the Chinese-owned parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, less than 90 days to sell the app or it is set to shut down again.
“I hope it stays; I love the app, there’s nothing that can replace it,” UK student Allison Beatty said.
