CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you like snow, then the trend has been your best friend over the past 24 hours. It’s still not a guarantee, but measurable snow chances have risen significantly for the Charlotte Metro since last night. This is looking like the little-snow-event-that-could for eastern NC. Here’s the forecast breakdown. WHAT’S CHANGED? Significant boost to snow totals in ENC Big trend NW for measurable snow totals Sizable shift NW for sleet/mix (pink) region along coast TIMING Tuesday PM – Wednesday AM KEY POINTS All snow for WCCB Charlotte area (top panel) Still not a guarantee I-85 & NW sees snow But it looks a lot better than it did last night Farther E, better snow chances Higher totals along I-95 corridor & slightly E FAQ ***PLEASE READ*** Will Charlotte see snow now? It definitely looks a lot better today than it did this weekend! That said, I don’t want to guarantee measurable snow in Charlotte just yet. Dry air will still eat away at totals around I-85 and back to the northwest. If I had to put percentages on it, I’d go with a 30% chance we stay flake-free, a 50% chance we see flakes but nothing over a half-inch, and a 20% chance we see snow measuring over a half-inch. Where are the highest totals going to be? Likely along I-95 and points just to the east. In the WCCB Charlotte viewing area, the farther south and east you go, the higher the totals will be. How does my Tuesday night commute look? It depends where you are! The farther south and west you are, the earlier the snow arrives. If you’re in SC around Columbia and southward, you want to be off the roads by 5 PM. The Charlotte area should be okay, but snow chances quickly rise around sunset. What about Wednesday morning road conditions? If you live along I-95 and eastward, forget about it. Areas to the west (white/gray/light blue) will want to monitor roads carefully. Delays/cancellations are likely southeast of I-85. Remember: the farther east you go, the worse roads will get. If I see snow, will it stick right away? Yes. The ground is very cold. IMPACTS Awful road conditions tonight along I-95 corridor and eastward, especially in NC Conditions generally improve the farther west you go I-85 should be fine tonight, depends on snow totals Under a half-inch, no big deal Over a half-inch could lead to a few issues Power outages generally unlikely Few possible along SC coast, SE NC where ice falls BOTTOMLINE Even though we don’t have to deal with nasty ice and sleet in the Charlotte area, this is still a tricky forecast! It’s going to be a balancing act between stubborn dry air to the northwest and strengthening moisture to the south and southeast. We’re right on the cutoff; areas in the Sandhills have a strong chance of seeing 1-2″, while areas along I-40 could get shut out completely. Even being off by 25 miles will make a major difference between the “haves” and “have-nots.” Don’t count on building a snowman in Charlotte tonight, but I’m thinking we’ll at least see a dusting. We know it’s easy to get excited with this system, but try to temper expectations if you live in the Charlotte area. We’ll see how this plays out.
