MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – A student at Wando High School was recently questioned about looking at material related to ISIS, a terrorist organization.
Three agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigations met with school resource officers on Jan. 8 regarding a student who had been looking at ISIS websites and chatrooms, according to a report from the Mount Pleasant Police Department.
According to the report, the lead investigators explained that the suspect had ISIS propaganda and approximately two years’ worth of research and communication in their possession. They said it also appeared the student was in contact with other individuals online who are ISIS sympathizers.
“A few videos that [redacted] had included beheadings, killings, and other lectures from ISIS extremists,” the report said.
When asked why the student had those videos, the student told investigators that he was doing a research project for school.
“The FBI agents explained they did not have charges against the student at this time, but requested law enforcement keep an eye on the situation and notify them if the student had any major changes in behavior or dress attire as they are concerned he is being groomed by ISIS extremists.”
FBI officials confirmed there were no current threats to the school or any individuals, and that the parents said there were no weapons in the house.
Wando High School Principal Chas Coker sent a letter to parents saying the investigation stemmed from concerns about the student's online activity; however, Coker said they were not aware of the student's activity happening on Charleston County School District property or school devices.
"School administration has worked closely with law enforcement to conduct a comprehensive threat assessment, during which the student provided an explanation for why he was researching these topics. After reviewing all available information, it has been determined through the law enforcement investigation and the school’s threat assessment process that there are no current threats to the school or individuals. No charges have been filed," Coker said in the letter to parents.
