Charleston County preparing for winter weather impacts

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Emergency operations centers are at the center of severe weather preparations. Charleston County officials say they have been tracking the winter weather headed our way since last week -- and they have a plan for this week's expected frozen precipitation.
Charleston County Emergency Operations officials say they have been on many conference calls and in meetings over the past several days as they prepare for this incoming weather event. They say preparations are important as they are the eyes and ears of responding to emergencies throughout the county.
The EOC will be partially activated beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, which means they will be working 12 on / 12 off shifts around the clock to dispatch emergency crews when and where needed.
It is emergency management’s job to remain in close communication with the National Weather Service as the forecast evolves and will issue updated recommendations as needed.
Their biggest concern is ice, especially on roadways, and they are keeping an eye on roads and bridges Tuesday and Wednesday. Emergency management officials say drivers should expect some closures around the county.
As the winter weather arrives, county officials are focused on three main things:
“Maintain situational awareness in the county, supporting the locals with any immediate resource requests, and three, based upon any impacts that we see in the county, to help solve any of those problems as they arise,” said Justin Pierce, Charleston County’s Emergency Management Director.
“In addition, we are opening the county shelter also on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to serve those most vulnerable populations that we have, particularly because of the extreme cold temperatures that we’re going to have over the course of 48 to 72 hours,” he added.
Charleston County will close government offices and facilities. Charleston County Public Library branches will close at 4 p.m. Tuesday, and the county says other adjustments may be made and announced once finalized.
