With Ben Johnson leaving to go to a division rival, who should be the next Lions offensive coordinator? It’s been no secret that the Detroit Lions could lose one, if not both of their coordinators this offseason, but when news broke that Ben Johnson was leaving to go to a division rival, that certainly cut a little deeper than expected. The connection to the Chicago Bears has been floating out there for a while, but many believed he might land elsewhere.
If you are a Caleb Williams believer, then this fit makes a lot of sense. The Bears have plenty of picks and cap space to work with, plus a former No. 1 overall pick at quarterback. And most importantly, it appears that the Bears are willing to give Johnson everything he could have asked for, whereas, a team like the Jacksonville Jaguars could not.
Today’s Question of the Day is...
Who do you want the Lions to replace Ben Johnson as OC?
The most likely candidates that immediately come to mind would be from within the organization. Assistant head coach/running backs coach Scottie Montgomery and passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand have already been linked as possible Ben Johnson replacements, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
When speaking with the media, Campbell made it clear that they will do their full due diligence and include external candidates in their OC search as well. They also plan to include Jared Goff in these discussions, since he had a hand in building the Lions’ current offense with Johnson.
Reading between the lines, it feels to me that the Lions will hire from within, and my top choice right now for the Lions’ next OC would be Montgomery. He’s done a fantastic job with the Lions’ RB group and by all counts appears to be a great leader. It remains to be seen whether he would be able to take over play-calling duties, but either way, the Lions should be in good hands, considering Campbell has proven that he can take over that responsibility if needed.
Your turn.
