Winter weather driving tips INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — When temperatures plummet, so does road traction, making ice a hidden danger for drivers. That warning light on your dashboard might be your only clue that conditions are ripe for slick spots. Take a look at this police video: a car loses control on an almost invisible patch of black ice. The two passengers escaped with minor injuries, thanks to one life-saving choice, wearing their seatbelts. Jennifer Stockburger, director of operations at Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center, stresses the importance of cautious driving during freezing conditions. “If there was ever a time that slow and steady wins the race, it’s in this case where you have the potential to lose traction,” Stockburger said. Stockburger recommends deliberate, gradual movements and plenty of space between vehicles to navigate slick conditions safely. “Everything in slick conditions takes longer,” she explained. “Leaving room not only protects you but gives space for others who may not be driving as cautiously.” Don’t Count on 4-Wheel Drive Think your 4-wheel or all-wheel drive will save you on black ice? Think again. Stockburger points out that all cars have 4-wheel brakes, but it’s your anti-lock braking system (ABS) that will help you regain control in slippery situations. When your ABS engages—signaled by a pulsing brake pedal—maintain steady pressure. Don’t lift your foot; let the system do its job. Regaining Control in a Skid If your car starts to slide, Stockburger offers this advice: Oversteer (rear tires lose traction): Turn into the skid. When you regain grip, your car will naturally go where you’re steering. Understeer (front tires lose traction): Resist the urge to oversteer. Keep the wheel steady until traction returns, so your car follows your intended path. In both cases, avoid abrupt movements. Smooth and steady is key to regaining control. The Tire Factor Your tires are your first line of defense against winter weather. Make sure they are properly inflated and have adequate tread for icy conditions. When the roads turn treacherous, slow and steady really does win the race. For more information, click here.
