COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Ohio State ran all the way to college football's national championship game in the first year using a 12-team playoff system, and coach Ryan Day was paid well for his role. In May 2022, Ryan Day got a contract extension through the 2028 season, which was supplemented last August with updated additional compensation rates. With a base salary of $2 million, Day made more than $10 million for the 2024 season, excluding bonuses. Day's 39-page contract is extensive and includes plenty of perks, such as a $10,000 payment for a required once-per-season Coca-Cola appearance and a $1,250,000 equipment payment to outfit players and coaches in Nike gear. Day’s contract also offers compensation for his media presence, as it is understood he will be asked to complete a number of interviews and outside appearances, for which he is paid $436,666.67 each month, or $5.25 million per year. Day also gets monetary incentives for winning the Big Ten championship and for College Football Playoff game appearances. Day will make $1 million for the College Football Playoff national championship win, and still would have made $500,000 for the team's appearance in the final had they lost. Day also gets 50 hours of professional use and 50 hours of personal use of a private plane each year. At the end of each school year, Day receives a $50,000 bonus if his athletes have a GPA above 3.0. If their average GPA is above 3.3, Day gets $100,000, and if it’s above 3.5, he gets $150,000.  Per his contract, Day can be fired for violating codes of conduct, breaching his contract or behaving unethically. If he is fired without cause, he will continue to receive his base $850,000 salary, as well as his media, Coca-Cola and equipment payments for two years. In accepting the substantial severance package, Day would agree to a non-disclosure agreement.  Day agreed to contact Ohio State’s athletic director – currently Ross Bjork – if he is in contact with anyone about possible employment at another university or professional team. If Day chooses to leave Ohio State between now and January 2026, he would owe OSU $3 million.  Here’s Ryan Day’s salary, totaled for 2024: $250,000 retention bonus $5.25 million media compensation $1.25 million equipment payment $1 million annual retention payment $2 million base salary 5.25% raise $10,261,875 in total
