ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Hours after his inauguration Monday, President Donald Trump pardoned nearly everyone convicted in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The action included the commutation of sentences of several others including Dominic Pezzola, a Proud Boy from Rochester, who, according to a sentencing memorandum, served as a rally boy for other members of the Proud Boys. On morning of Jan. 6, approximately 200 people marched towards the Capitol, with Pezzola meeting up with the group towards the afternoon. During the riot, Pezzola with police officers, stole a riot shield, and then broke one of the windows of the Capitol building, creating an entry point for the rioters. The riot took place before then-President-Elect Joe Biden took office. The attack was part of an attempt to keep Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election. Trump commutes sentences of Jan. 6 extremist group leaders; Tarrio gets pardon Although Pezzola was the only one of the five Proud Boys members found not guilty of seditious conspiracy, he was found guilty of the following: Obstruction of official proceeding Conspiracy to use force, intimidation, or threats to prevent officers of the United States from discharging their duties Interference with law enforcement officers during a civil disorder Destruction of federal property Assaulting federal officers Robbery of personal property of the United States In 2023, he had been sentenced to 10 years in prison, but Trump's changed his sentence to time served as of Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. It remains unclear if other local men involved in the attack on the U.S. Capitol – James Weeks, Cody Mattice and James Mault – are part of the group pardoned, though the language in the order would appear to include them. Around 140 police officers were assaulted in the attack and one of them attacked died a day afterwards.
