ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With a pivot to bitter cold temperatures this week, it could mean potential damage to your plumbing systems. News 8's Latest Weather Forecast Colin Luttrell of Colin the Plumber LLC said these frigid temperatures mean his team will be extra busy. Before anything else, he recommended turning the water off going to your spigots. "I believe full heartedly that half of Rochester doesn't shut their shut offs off, and what happens is that water freezes up inside, and it ends up causing a massive flood inside the property," Luttrell said. Luttrell told News 8 those, along with frozen pipes, are the most common calls. "That's usually our call is going out there. We see an icicle coming from the exterior hose bib, and it looks like a frozen waterfall," Luttrell said. With nine technicians on the road for dozens of calls a day, Luttrell said there are steps homeowners can take to prevent any floods from happening. "The biggest thing I tell homeowners is to make sure they know where their main shut offs are," Luttrell said. "Learn to know where it is for preparation for the host pickets, there's also shut offs, or there's also shut offs after the host picket that you're supposed to shut off right before winter to get all that water out so nothing's sitting in there." And in the situation where a house does get a frozen pipe, and splits and floods... "It's always good practice to have a sump pump in your basement," Luttrell said. "A sump pump is a pump that you have a crack that goes inset with the basement floor, and if there's ever a flood, all that water usually pools down there, and it's able to exit through a pipe. That way, you don't walk into your basement and have six inches of rainwater down there."
