Ride Along: Tow truck driver in Rochester talks winter driving
Jan 20, 2025
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rounding out our snow/cold coverage, we head back to the drive Monday morning. Things were likely a little easier for those with a remote car starter—but for those without, it might not have been the smoothest start to the day. Either way, we all woke up to a fresh blanket of snow that likely made for a hectic commute.
While many of us woke up to more snow than anticipated, the arrival of the arctic air was something we all saw coming. With heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures blanketing the area, tow truck drivers like Rachael Davey of Ricci's Towing found themselves inundated with calls. Unfortunately, she said when the weather turns treacherous, many drivers neglect to slow down, often resulting in accidents that increase the demand for tow truck services.
"There's typically more accidents than usual. Just people don't be too cautious about driving on the snow or they don't prepare for delays or the snowplows," Davey said. "We normally only have probably about five drivers on. We got probably another two more coming on for the day to help us out."

Davey also recommended starting your car a bit earlier to ensure it's running smoothly before heading out. She noted that this time of year sees a spike in dead car batteries.
“We’ve just been seeing a lot of you know, the no starts. People go out to start their cars and they’re dead. So, they probably don’t drive them too much or they said over the weekend because they probably didn’t want to go out or what have you," Davey said. “If I had to say, it would be to leave at least a half an hour early to make sure your car starts or what have you.”
Over the next few days, take Davey's advice and allow yourself extra time to ensure your car is running smoothly before hitting the road. The last thing you want is to be running late only to face unexpected car troubles.
